Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Sarasota County, FL?

Short answer: it depends on where you live in Sarasota County and what kind of tree you want to remove. Sarasota County and its municipalities each have their own tree protection ordinances, and the rules differ meaningfully depending on whether your property is in unincorporated Sarasota County, the City of Sarasota, Venice, North Port, or another municipality.

Unincorporated Sarasota County

For properties outside city limits, tree removal is governed by the Sarasota County Land Development Regulations. Generally:

  • Trees 8 inches or more in diameter at breast height (DBH — measured 4.5 feet from ground) may require a permit before removal
  • “Specimen trees” and “heritage trees” have additional protections based on size and species
  • Removal of protected trees typically requires replacement planting or payment into the county tree mitigation fund

Common exemptions include: dead or dying trees that pose an imminent safety hazard, trees within 10 feet of a principal structure, and certain invasive species designated by the county.

City of Sarasota

The City of Sarasota has its own tree protection ordinance and is generally stricter than county regulations. A permit is required for removal of trees 6 inches DBH or larger. Historic neighborhoods and waterfront areas often have additional restrictions. The city’s Urban Forestry Division reviews permit applications.

Venice and North Port

Venice and North Port maintain separate ordinances. In Venice, trees above a certain size in front yards or on corner lots may require city planning department approval even on private property. North Port has similar size-based triggers. If your property is within either city limit, contact that city’s planning or public works department to confirm requirements.

What Happens If You Remove a Tree Without a Permit?

Unpermitted removal of a protected tree can result in fines and mandatory replacement requirements. In some cases you may be required to plant replacement trees of equivalent canopy value — which can cost more than the permit itself. Code enforcement complaints from neighbors are common in Sarasota, and unpermitted tree work is taken seriously.
